Will Canadian Buy "Made In Canada" During Black Friday Shopping

As Canadians, we know this year has brought significant economic uncertainty for many families, driven in large part by factors south of the border—most notably the policies of D.T. Amid the challenges, it’s been tough to find positive news about consumer spending. But one encouraging trend has emerged: more Canadians are choosing Made-in-Canada products and Canadian national and local food to avoid U.S.-made alternatives.

Even before September, 86% of Canadians said they planned to shop closer to home, and 84% reported they would specifically seek out Canadian-made goods. That commitment is showing up in real numbers: sales of Canadian-made food products are up more than 10% year from last year, while purchases of U.S.-made goods have dropped nearly 9%.

Will Canadians continue buying Canadian during the holiday shopping season? I believe they will—especially when Canadian brands (‘Made in Canada’, not ‘Product of Canada’) are priced within about 10% of competing options. In sectors like food and spirits where pricing is competitive, we can expect Canadian products to see an even stronger surge in sales.

Holiday gift budgets are expected to hold steady at an average of $975. So as you head out for Black Friday shopping this weekend, look for the Canadian label and consider choosing Canadian-made products. You’ll feel good about supporting our economy—and you’ll be helping Canadian businesses thrive.

Happy Black Friday shopping!
